In this video, I describe my work and message to CTV's Natasha Eloi on The Circuit on SPACE Channel in 2009.
HELLO! My name is Erica Balon aka EGR (pronounced Eager) and I am an artist. For over a decade I have created artwork on just about any surface you could imagine, inspired by color, design, fashion, architecture, landscapes, street art and graffiti. At 17, I studied Art and Interpretive Illustration at Sheridan College in Oakville, and began creating editorial illustrations for Toronto's Globe and Mail newspapers in '98. My work has since evolved to include the creation of large scale murals, installations, live art and performance. Inspired by Canada's diverse cultural, spiritual and musical influences, I discovered my love of creating live art at concerts, festivals and events the world over. I believe that art should be accessible, and my work often challenges one's view of art in public spaces. My main objective is to explore social and political themes, utilizing figurative and narrative compositions, with an emphasis on determination, empowerment, and hope. Along with countless illustrations for magazines and album covers, I have exhibited my work in Canada's first national exhibit of street art at the Institute for Contemporary Culture at The Royal Ontario Museum; various exhibitions in the Art Gallery of Ontario, as well as galleries and public spaces worldwide.
Currently, I am expanding my art to include performance and music. I am currently working alongside 1812 Entertainment on the film "Leader Of The Opposition (LOTO)" as both poster designer, lead actress, and have been featured in the soundtrack. As an artist, I welcome challenges as opportunities and thrive under pressure.
