I was lucky to have the opportunity to hang out with the legendary TATS CRU from the Bronx, New York last summer, and paint a little something with them. Bio, BG 183, and Nicer, the original old school members, are super hardworking, talented and dedicated fellas, sincere in their objectives and are definitely inspirations to me for how far they have come. More recent members of TATS Cru, How and Nosm, are ridiculously funny, super talented twins that have more than their fair share of skills individually, so you can imagine how they all team up. TATS CRU were kind enough to let me in on a not-so-typical work week, painting a wall for a marriage proposal, and now I can share that experience with you.

The beauty of a woman is something we all can see. The feeling of attraction is something we all can feel. "Something seXXXy" art exhibition links four modern artists whose depictions of women and beauty go beyond something we can simply see. Experience for yourself, a little something sexy.
Featured artists biographies:
Erica Gosich Rose aka EGR (pronounced Eager) grew up in Burlington; a small, quiet suburban city just a train ride away from Toronto, Canada. Her fascination and involvement with graffiti and street art intensified while traveling to and from Sheridan College for Illustration; the aesthetics and concepts of which are still featured prominently in her work today. Presently, EGR's works can be found in magazines and music videos, on crumbling city walls and in pristine art galleries. Indeed, part of EGR's appeal is her ability to bridge art, design and functional purpose. She is equally appealing to street art lovers, gallery curators and corporate art directors, and just as comfortable with traditional oil paints as she is wielding aerosol cans. The artist's talents have attracted an impressive roster of clients--from prissy Tiffany & Co. to car giant Toyota to local hip hop rag Pound. Galleries the world over have welcomed her work-- in locales as far as Australia and even Florence, Italy, where she was recently invited to participate in a two-week long, live art exhibition in 2007. Pop culture and social references abound in the work of EGR and, though specific themes vary, the female perspective is a recurring staple. As women are still a minority in the boys' club of urban art, and EGR employs feminine motifs in her works, many consider her a pioneer in the street art world.
EGR's work can be viewed and purchased online at www.EGRart.com or by appointment in Toronto, Canada.
A confluence of cultures and contradictions, Dixon, aka Juan Carlos Noria is a painter for our times. Born in Caracas, Venezuela he carries his Latin American sensibility on his sleeve. As a teen growing up in Ottawa, Canada, he became an accomplished figure skater. Grace and lines were an obsession. So, too were his ideas of subversion. He fell out of skating after hitting the rigid class structure of the sport, finding comfort (and discomfort) in visual art, on the streets with a paint can, postering, skateboarding, and fleeing police. A strange opportunity then came: a world tour with Disney on Ice. It heightened his sense of absurdity, humour and anger, sharpened his visual and social awareness. Arriving back in Ottawa, he hung up the skates and his career took flight with live painting performances. So proficient from his days of graffiti, he quickly earned a reputation for highly resolved canvases produced in front of appreciative crowds. In November 2004, he moved to Barcelona, Spain to find tranquilo, a new view of the world and new audiences. Since his move, he has evolved, focused and become more prolific, with exhibits in Spain, the United States and Canada.
True to subversive nature, he undercuts his own personality allowing himself to explore two other personas and visual styles. He sometimes works under the pseudonyms of Royal or Dixon. He has been influenced by his contemporaries; Mark Marsters, Pat Thompson and Dave Cooper. Yet, he is himself-singular Juan; without pretense, full of concern for others, quick to laugh and quicker to paint something ripe comment on our times.
Dixon's work can be viewed at http://Dixon.them.ca.
Art Child of HSA crew, from Toronto, Canada, is can easily be described as one of the best character artists in the country, and quite possibly the world. Known to his family and friends as AC, his definitive style and extraordinary use of color come from strict and extensive background studies in spraycan art, coupled with an honours degree in Classical Animation from Sheridan College. His countless spraypainted walls can be found scattered throughout Toronto's downtown core and west end, as he has been an active member of the graffiti movement for over two decades. His work has played a vital role in hip hop culture as an inspiration to those around him. His passion also lies in martial arts, weight lifting and B Boying, Art Child continues to live and thrive off of his art.
Art Child's work can be viewed online at www.ArtChildHSA.blogspot.com.
Esther Sanchez, originally from Ontario, Canada, began a decade ago showing her artwork in various venues throughout Toronto, while freelancing as an illustrator. Her art will lure the viewer into her pretty world of sexy and stylish women that are beautifully created in rich, bold colors and eye-catching patterns. Each of her ladies has a unique look and attitude, inspired by fashion, music, nature, anime, comic books, toys and 60's prints. This ultra-feminine style has led her to creative design work, painting commissions and participating in art shows. She is currently collaborating with a number of fashion designers and planning to produce art events. Her pins and line of tote bags have been featured in the New York Post and Time Out New York. Esther currently lives in and works in New York.
Esther's work can be viewed online at www.EstherSanchez.com.
DJ FATHOM has constantly amazed us with his seemingly unending desire to innovate and create. Whether it be on the wall, the canvas or the turntables, this cat is always growing as an artist. DJ FATHOM grew up in the ultra creative environment of Victoria B.C., a birthplace to almost all of legendary underground westcoast hip hoppers. Influenced by the sounds of a van city legend DJ KILOCEE and his infamous KRISPY BISKUT mix show and just being around the thriving early 90's Victoria hip hop scene, DJ FATHOM began his more-than-a-decade long journey as a true hip hop head. After moving to Toronto in 2000 DJ FATHOM began to make serious moves. Linking up with Press Pause art collective, TCC CREW, and many other movers and shakers, he began to establish himself as THE DJ to call for the sounds of the west. In 2002 he established SPIN CYCLE at FEZ BATIK, one of the most popular and longest running hip hop weekly parties in Toronto. Shortly after, branching out and creating NEW KICKS at GYPSY CO-OP (2 and a half years...and still runnin!) DJ FATHOM has played alongside and opened for: PETE ROCK AND CL SMOOTH, ACEYALONE, SOULS OF MISCHIEF, J-LIVE, A-TRAK, DJ DOPEY, FRANK AND DANK, VISIONARIES, AMON TOBIN, SWOLLEN MEMBERS, SKRATCH BASTID, DYLAN MURRAY, WILDCHILD, ABDOMINAL, DJ FORMAT, ODDITIES, EVIL DEE and many more.
DJ FATHOM is available for bookings of all types at wildstyles@gmail.com or take a listen at www.myspace.com/djfathomdrt.
